Home accessibility modifications in Riverton

Riverton developed through the 1970s and 1980s on flat ground between the Canning River and South Street, and it has the feel of a settled, established suburb where many residents have been in the same home for twenty or thirty years.

The housing stock is brick-and-tile, predominantly single-storey, and well-suited to accessibility modifications - solid walls, flat sites, and floor plans that are compact but generally workable. The bathrooms are small by modern standards, and the step-down shower recess is almost universal, but the bones of the home make the modification straightforward.

A number of households in Riverton include an older family member living with adult children. In those homes the modification serves a different purpose than in a solo older person's home - it needs to work safely for one person while not disrupting the rest of the household, and it needs to look like a home, not an adaptation.

What we find in Riverton homes

Every suburb has its own housing character and its own access challenges. Here is what we most often see when we visit homes in Riverton.

  • Step-down shower recesses at 100-150 mm below the bathroom floor are the starting point for most Riverton modification visits - the fix is the same as across the southern suburbs but the solid brick walls and flat substrate make it straightforward in these homes.

  • Some Riverton homes were extended in the 1980s, adding a second bathroom or enlarging the original - these extensions sometimes have slightly different floor heights from the original house, which we check before quoting any floor-level modification.

  • In homes with multigenerational living arrangements, the older resident's bathroom is sometimes a secondary bathroom in the extension rather than the original main bathroom, so we assess both spaces during the site visit.

  • Riverton's proximity to Westfield Booragoon and the medical cluster around Fiona Stanley means many residents are aware of mobility and accessibility in a way that makes the conversation about modifications practical and focused.

  • The suburb is around twenty minutes from Melville, and we visit regularly. If a modification is needed quickly because of a change in circumstance, tell us when you request the quote and we will work out what is realistic.

What we build in Riverton

All nine of our services are available in this area. Here is what people most often ask us about.

  • Accessible bathrooms

Full accessible bathroom design and build, in-house, by a team that has done this for over ten years across Perth.

  • Walk-in showers

A shower you walk straight into - no step to clear, no screen to navigate around, and a floor that drains away from you.

  • Wet rooms

A wet room waterproofs the entire bathroom floor so there is no shower recess - the whole room is the shower zone.

  • Accessible kitchens

Kitchen changes that fix the specific thing beating you, from a set of drawers and a lever tap through to a lowered bench with knee clearance.

  • Ramps & level entry

Rubber, timber, aluminium and concrete ramps built to the right gradient, from a door threshold to a full exterior ramp.

  • Doorway widening

Wider clear openings for wheelchair and walker access.

Questions

Questions about work in Riverton

My Riverton home was extended in 1984 and the bathroom is in the newer part. Is that a problem?

Not usually. 1980s extensions in this area are standard brick-and-tile construction with comparable substrates to the original home. The main thing we check is the floor level transition between old and new - if the two sections sit at slightly different heights, we design the modification to manage that transition safely.

We have an older parent living with us in our Riverton home. The bathroom works for us but not for her. What can be done without a full renovation?

Quite a lot, without pulling the room apart. Grab rails at the toilet and shower, a raised toilet seat or new toilet suite at the right height, a fold-down shower seat, and a threshold ramp at the bathroom door can all be fitted in a day or two and make a significant difference without touching the tiles or the floor level.

How do you make sure the modifications look like part of the home rather than medical equipment?

We use rail and fixture finishes that suit the existing room - brushed nickel, matte black, or chrome depending on the tapware - and we design the layout so rails sit at the functional positions rather than at arbitrary heights. Good work does not look clinical.

Does the $149 home safety audit cover the whole house or just the bathroom?

The whole house. We walk every space the person uses daily - bathroom, toilet, bedroom, entry, stairs, path to the car - note every hazard we find, and produce a written report with a priority order. You see the full picture, not just the most obvious room.
