Home accessibility modifications in Joondalup

Joondalup and the surrounding northern suburbs - Beldon, Edgewater, Heathridge, Connolly - were developed through the 1980s and 1990s as part of the Joondalup new city project. The homes are brick-and-tile, often double-storey, with larger floor plans than the older southern suburbs and ensuites that were designed to look generous rather than to function well for someone with changed mobility.

Larger bathrooms do not automatically mean more accessible ones. In many Joondalup homes the main shower is a step-entry unit behind a pivot screen, the toilet is in a separate narrow compartment with no room for a side approach, and grab rails were never part of the original fit-out.

Joondalup is around fifty minutes from our Melville base in normal traffic. We travel north regularly and schedule visits there alongside other northern suburbs work to keep response times reasonable. The distance does not change the cost, and it does not change the quality of the job.

What we find in Joondalup homes

Every suburb has its own housing character and its own access challenges. Here is what we most often see when we visit homes in Joondalup.

  • Double-storey construction is common in Joondalup, and the most practical solution when stairs become difficult is often a ground-floor modification rather than making the upstairs bathroom safer - we assess what the ground floor offers before recommending an approach.

  • Separate toilet compartments in 1990s Joondalup ensuites are typically 800-850 mm wide, too narrow for a side approach with a walking frame. Opening the partition between the compartment and the main bathroom creates room for a rail and a clear path without moving the plumbing.

  • Sandy soils across the northern coastal plain mean external ramp and path installations are straightforward - no rock-cutting, predictable footing depths, and no limestone close to the surface.

  • Joondalup Health Campus is a major public hospital discharging patients into this catchment, and we receive referrals from people returning home who need modifications completed before they arrive. We work to discharge timelines and are honest about what can realistically be achieved.

  • Many 1990s homes in Joondalup use the roller-door garage as the primary daily entry point - making the path from the garage into the main living area level is often the first change we make, as it is the route used most.

Services available

What we build in Joondalup

All nine of our services are available in this area. Here is what people most often ask us about.

  • Accessible bathrooms

Full accessible bathroom design and build, in-house, by a team that has done this for over ten years across Perth.

  • Walk-in showers

A shower you walk straight into - no step to clear, no screen to navigate around, and a floor that drains away from you.

  • Wet rooms

A wet room waterproofs the entire bathroom floor so there is no shower recess - the whole room is the shower zone.

  • Accessible kitchens

Kitchen changes that fix the specific thing beating you, from a set of drawers and a lever tap through to a lowered bench with knee clearance.

  • Ramps & level entry

Rubber, timber, aluminium and concrete ramps built to the right gradient, from a door threshold to a full exterior ramp.

  • Doorway widening

Wider clear openings for wheelchair and walker access.

  • Non-slip treatments

Non-slip clear coating for your existing tiles.

Questions

Questions about work in Joondalup

We are in Joondalup. Is the travel from Melville reflected in your pricing?

No travel surcharge is applied. Joondalup is around fifty minutes from our base and we schedule northern suburb visits to make the travel efficient. The $149 home safety audit costs the same as for suburbs next door to us in Melville.

Our Joondalup home is double-storey and climbing the stairs is becoming unsafe. Can the ground floor be made to work?

Often yes, and it is usually the better approach. If the ground-floor laundry or powder room can be converted into a functional accessible bathroom, that removes the stair problem entirely. We assess what the ground floor allows during the site visit and tell you whether it is feasible and what it would involve.

A family member is being discharged from Joondalup Health Campus and the home is not ready. What can you do?

Call us as soon as the discharge date is set. Simple modifications - grab rails, a raised toilet suite, a threshold ramp - can sometimes be completed in a few days. A full shower conversion takes longer. We will tell you honestly what is achievable in the time you have and what to prioritise.

The toilet compartment in our ensuite is too narrow to use easily. What are the options?

Opening the partition between the toilet compartment and the main bathroom is usually the most effective fix. It creates side access, room for a rail, and a clear path from the shower. The partition is typically non-structural in 1990s construction, so removing it is a manageable job without major disruption.
